Of Whales and Men by R. B. Robertson

Of Whales and Men by Dr. R. B. Robertson is a creative nonfiction piece written in the 1950s about the whaling industry and the “psychopaths” that work on the factory ship for 8 months out of the year–every year. Dr. Robertson dubbed all the whalers psychopaths because they chose a life away from civilization, to the furthest ends of the southern seas, to the Antarctic and the South Georgia Islands to catch whales—a very smelly occupation. “You won’t get to know us, doctor, in the short time you’ll be with us,” he cautioned me, “and, when you come to write about us, it will be very easy to make us out to be a mob of half-crazy malcontents whose only aim in life is to see the bottom of every whisky bottle. But try to give a fair report on us, even when you come to tell about our boozing. After all, though the kirk and the owners and the folks at home say we drink too much, we bring the wales back to them.” –Old Burnett: Whaler (Of Whales and Men by R. B. Robertson; 1954)

I really enjoyed this, apart from the killing of whales—that was hard to stomach—but the men on the ship were an interesting lot. Thanks Dr. Robertson for giving us such rare glimpse of a (thankfully) deceased era. Below is my review on #goodreads … I don’t understand why the other reviews are just so-so?! Maybe I’m strange? I absolutely loved this creative nonfiction piece! …To the point that I didn’t want to put it down, especially toward the end. I found myself excited to get back to the sea with these whalers as they all became like beloved characters in a classic fiction novel. I would highly recommend. The content is interesting and mysterious since so man on earth, hopefully, will ever experience adventures in legal whaling again.

I found this copy tucked away in a damp, moldy basement during a local estate sale. I love seafaring stories and since this was TRUE, I had to read it. I’m so glad I did!!

The History of Fly Fishing by Ian Whitelaw

Life is filled with wonder and enchantment when we’re not worried about the fires in Australia. Living life to its fullest means exploring that which enchants us or excites our curiosity. For me that is fly fishing. I’ve never done it but for a long time I’ve wanted to learn this art, not only fishing with flies but learning how to tie them myself(make them). I feel the intricacy of this art would appeal to my ready hands. So through research I found this book and thought I’d start here. The History of Fly-Fishing In Fifty Flies by Ian Whitelaw gives examples of different rivers around the world and which flies are best for these rivers based on the insects and animals that live in the area. I can’t wait to dive into this book and learn more!

The Book of Ruth

The book of Ruth is one of the shortest books in the Bible. It is only 4 chapters, but it is essential to the lessons we learn through scripture. In Ruth man-made prejudice and rules are broken down and defied in the relationship and love between Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi. They come from different religions, and there has been much hatred between their two civilizations. God doesn’t love and accept based on age, gender, sex, race, or religion. Anyone can come to God, we are not defined by man-made expectations and rules. Let us remember that the difference between what God accepts and what man accepts can be much different. Even some of the rules churches make as far as who’s welcome should be questioned if they are not welcome to ALL. Are we seeing the world through man’s eyes or God’s? Ask this often.

The Complete Book of Etiquette by Amy Vanderbilt

I love having fancy dinners. Tonight for New Year’s Eve my husband’s cousin and I will be serving Cornish game hens, potatoes au gratin, scallops, and green beans with red pepper flakes and garlic for a small party at me casa. When it comes to setting the table I have always consulted my book of etiquette by Amy Vanderbilt—very fancy! May I dream of a life such as hers with servants!? Whoa! I almost feel like the book is too good for me, haha! I’m working on a budget ya’ll, and lack of space so as far as the correct place to of silverware I do what I want now–I made the centerpiece with random plants found on my walks and in my backyard. This makes it more special I think. No servants here!

Letters of Mozart and his family 💕 🎵 🎶 💕

This time of year I always have a craving to read the letters of Mozart and his family. I have not finished these yet, they are perfect to leave and come back to. The cold here makes me want to be cozy under blankets for the rest of the winter and this is the perfect collection for that. Maybe it’s the family factor, maybe it’s the way Mozart talks about the cold weather in his travels, I don’t know, but I love it! Always in carriages, always at parties in grand estates. 😌

Richard Rohr’s Essential Teachings on Love

Will finish Richard Rohr’s Essential Teachings on Love today—have about 20 pages left. Richard Rohr is a Franciscan Christian Mystic whose vocation is to teach unconditional love based on the inspiration he gained from the writings of Saint Terese of Liseaux. I really enjoyed this, he articulates himself well, and I enjoyed the personal stories tied into his lessons.

Like I said before I really ‘get’ the mystics—they speak my faith language, so I’m usually open to anything they have to teach me.

Celebrating Gratitude with Thank You Notes!!

It’s Thanksgiving, and I’m finally getting around to sending out thank you notes from my birthday, complete with a wax insignia. Etiquette tells us thank you notes should be written before two weeks have passed from the event date. I’m just hitting that mark. I love buying stationary because I send a lot of notes. I collect neat notecards like the toad pictured if you swipe 👉. This one is from @bridgettejonesnatureprints . Her stuff is great! Check her out!! I send my cute cards to recipients who will keep them and cherished the art. .

.

.

.

How about you? Do you send out thank you’s or letters to friends? . .

The Ambassadors by Henry James

Trying to read The Ambassadors by Henry James on a full charter bus. I grabbed it because it was small enough to fit in my purse. However my decision to start a new book on a loud bus with children and parents talking all around me was probably mistake. How did I forget I need complete silence or white noise to read? I can’t even listen to music because it’s so loud. And now they’ve just turned on a movie so I guess I’ll give up (the speaker is above my head) and stare into the abyss. I feel like the story in the book is going on without me since I’m not comprehending it but rather eavesdropping on the conversations around me against my desire to do so. Oh well. Everyone has got an interesting story to tell.

What about you? Can you read in chaos? Or do you need silence like me?
